WHAT THE HAULING INDUSTRY IS?

The trucking industry refers to the use of road transportation, such as semi-trailers trucks and light trucks, to move goods across overland routes.

  • Trucking accounts for over 70 percent of freight in the United States.
  • Six percent of all full-time jobs in America are in the trucking industry
  • Trucking generates over $700 billion every year.
  • At 53.9 billion gallons of fuel per year, these truck drivers use over 12 percent of all fuel used in the United States.
  • Tractor-trailers drive 432.9 billion miles every single year, and there are over 15.2 million trucks on the road.

WHAT IS SEMI-TRAILER TRUCK?

A semi-tractor-trailer truck, also known as simply a semi-trailer truck, semi-tractor truck, semi-tractor-trailer, or tractor-trailer truck, is the combination of a tractor unit and one or more semi-trailers to carry freight. A semi-trailer is a trailer without a front axle. It attaches to the tractor with a type of hitch called a fifth-wheel.

It is variously known as a transport truck, semi-truck, trailer truck, tractor truck, transfer truck, articulated truck, single truck, semi-trailer, tractor-trailer, semi-tractor, semi, trailer, tractor, big rig, eighteen-wheeler, depending on the country and region.

The common trailer types used are Dry van trailers, refrigerated trailers (reefers), cistern trailers (tanker), standard flatbed trailers, drop-deck or step-deck trailers, and lowboy trailers.

WHAT IS FLATBED TRUCKING?

“Flatbedders do it with strap and chains”

Flatbed trucking is a type of trucking where you will haul oversized or wide-load items. Basically, anything that cannot be haul in an enclosed trailer because of its size or shape. Learn more on flatbed trucking.

TRUCK DRIVERS

Truck drivers are persons employed as the operator of a commercial motor vehicle (CMV). CMV’s can be of varying shapes and sizes, from 10,000-pound (4,500 kg) pickup trucks assigned to haul specialized or small quantities of freight, all the way up to 105,500-pound (47,900 kg) semi-trailer trucks. Trucks are assigned a class rating based upon the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). “Heavy-duty” trucks (with a GVWR of at least 26,000 pounds (12,000 kg), require a qualified driver with a valid CDL (commercial driver’s license) to operate.

Truck drivers spend up to 11 hours per day driving, and up to 14 hours per day in driving, fueling, paperwork, vehicle inspections, and repairs.

Long-haul drivers often spend weeks away from home, spending their time off and sleeping at truck stops or rest areas.
